VENUE DESCRIPTION

Levi is one of the largest ski resorts in Lapland. Situated 170km north of the Arctic Circle, Levi is Finland's most famous ski holiday resort.
The Levi fell is 531 meters above sea level. There are 48 skiing slopes in Levi and the skiing and snowboarding season is particularly long, lasting at times from mid-October to the beginning of June. Levi has been chosen the best domestic skiing resort in Finland several times.
The Finnish venue is the northernmost site on the World Cup circuit and made its international debut in 2000, hosting four European Cup races. Four years later the 'Levi Black' course, which has a 52% steep final stretch that almost makes you takeoff, welcomed the World Cup tour with a ladies' slalom won by home audience's hero Tanja Poutiainen.
Levi has hosted World Cup events annually from 2004. In 2007 the event in Levi was cancelled because of poor snow conditions and unfavorable forecasts.
Several big names had made their mark on the Finnish territory such as Maria Riesch, Marlies Schild, Anja Paerson, Janica Kostelic (who dominated the SL in March 2006, by defeating Anja Paerson by 1.47 seconds) and Benjamin Raich. The Austrian ace won the first male slalom competition in 2006, defeating Swedish Markus Larsson and Italy's Giorgio Rocca. In 2007, Jean-Baptiste Grange of France took the honors at Levi.
