Volvo Ocean Race 2011- 2012 – Abu Dhabi
Start:January 12, 2012
End: January 14, 2012
Venue: Abu Dhabi Corniche
Address: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
The Volvo Ocean Race, a world-wide yacht race held every three years will be coming to Abu Dhabi for the third leg of the race from 12 – 14 January 2012.
The Volvo Ocean Race starts in Alicante Spain in October sailing through a Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, around Cape Horn to Itajaí, Miami, Lisbon, Lorient and concluding in Galway, Ireland in July 2012.

The six teams poised to battle it out for the honour of lifting the Volvo Ocean Race trophy are Team Telefónica, Team Sanya, Groupama sailing team, CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG Propulsion.
One of the best ways for spectators to enjoy the race is during the In-Port event to be held on Friday, 13 Jan.
“The in-port race is a critical component of the Volvo Ocean Race, an integral part of the spectacle of the race. This is when the public can see man and machine engage in battle in very close quarters. The race course for the in-port race is always close to shore, so even if you can’t get out on a spectator boat, the nearest beach or breakwater may offer just as good a view.”(1)
The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority has setup the specially-designed 55,000m² Destination Village on the Abu Dhabi Corniche breakwater. This site is designed to serve as a sailing center once the Volvo Ocean Race fleet sails out of the UAE capital.

The Destination Village will be open to the public free of charge daily from December 30 this year to January 14, next year. ADTA anticipates welcoming more than 100,000 visitors through its gates.
A special area dedicated to ADTA’s Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (ADOR), the 11-strong race team which has made history as the first Arab entry in the race, will also be developed. In a Volvo Ocean Race first, ADTA is erecting the team’s shore base in the heart of the village. The base will have see-through walls and the sail loft will be open to the public. An interactive experience centre is being developed so that the public can fully engage with the team and the Volvo Ocean Race.
ADOR’s record-breaking training yacht will be displayed next to the sail loft – another stopover ‘first.’ It will be flanked by a scaffolding cradle so spectators can take a behind-the-scenes guided tour with an ADOR shore team member and see the inner-workings and the testing conditions of life onboard.
ADTA is also planning a stunning entertainment programme for the two-week stop-over including concerts, a welcoming ceremony for the first arriving yacht, in-port races, pro-am races, city receptions and top-class evening events taking place throughout the city.
