The first training weeks have already passed, and with the preparations for the 2011/12 season getting underway, new coaches have taken up their work in the international Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined circuits. Below please find a summary of the changes in the coaching ranks of the World Cup teams so far that have come to the attention of the FIS Newsflash:
In Ski Jumping, the most prominent coach change has been the selection of the new head coach of the Norwegian national team, Austrian Alexander Stoeckl as the successor of Mika Kojonkoski. The 37-year-old, who was working with the Austrian Ski Association so far, signed a two-year contract with the option of extending the contract for three further years.
In Russia, Alex Sviatov was replaced with another Austrian, Richard Schaller, whose task it will be to make the Russian ski jumpers fit for the Games in Sochi 2014. Schallert, who has worked as coach in the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria, is considered a great expert and will be joined in Russia by Gerhard Hofer, the technician, who developed the new binding system together with Simon Ammann last year and was working with the Finnish team in 2010/11.
Other known changes include the move of Matjaz Zupan from Slovenia to France where he replaces Julien Eybert Guillon. The new Slovenian head coach is Goran Janus. As announced this week, the Swedish Ski Jumping team has chosen Kjetil Strandbråten of Norway as new coach to replace Wolfgang Hartmann.
In Nordic Combined, Germany's 2011 world champion Eric Frenzel will be coached by a former teammate. The many time medalist Ronny Ackermann has started his coaching career at the highest level; he will report only to head coach Hermann Weinbuch. In neighboring Austria, Günther Chromecek left his co-head coach position and will train the so-called "training group three" instead. Even further south, in Italy, Fabian Ebenhoch from Austria replaced his compatriot Harald Rodlauer as head coach of the Squadra Azzurra.
There is a new head of Nordic Combined in Switzerland. Berni Schödler replaces 1988 Olympic Champion Hippolyt Kempf in this function. In Norway, too, there will be a new Nordic Combined sports director as Sverre Rotevatn will take the place of Kjetil Strandbraten who decided to look for new challenges in the future. Kristian Hammer will be in charge for the A-team together with Nik Huber.
In Estonia, Petter Kukkonen will focus more on Ski Jumping and on the career of Kaarel Nurmsalu. Most probably, Tambet Pikkor will be responsible for Estonia's Nordic Combined team. No changes are reported from Finland (head coach Kimmo Savolainen), Poland (Jakub Michalczuk), France (Etienne Guoy), Japan (Takanori Kohno) or USA (Dave Jarrett).
In some countries, negotiations with the coaching teams are still underway and new appointments will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
