The 2011–12 Skeleton World Cup is a multi race tournament over a season for skeleton. The season will start on 2 December 2011 in Igls, Austria and end on 11 February 2012 in Calgary, Canada. The World Cup is organised by the FIBT who also run World Cups and Championships in bobsleigh. This season iss sponsored by Viessmann.
In skeleton, there are separate racing disciplines for men and women. In World Cup competitions two heats are held over one day. At the FIBT World Championships (held annually except in the Olympic year), four heats are held over two days. The skeleton competition at the 2010 Olympic Winter games in Vancouver, Canada skeleton events will be four-heat competitions for the first time.

World Cup tour makes next stop in Koenigssee, Germany KOENIGSSEE, Germany (Jan. 10, 2012)–The World Cup tour will make its fifth stop on the International Bobsled and Skeleton World Cup tour in Koenigssee, Germany this week. Koenigssee hosted the 2011 World Championships to cap last season and is a favorite destination for many athletes.
“I want redemption from World Championships,” said women’s skeleton athlete Katie Uhlaender, who finished ninth in Koenigssee last year. “Bendaway and I are going to have a little chat, and I am hungry to medal.”
Uhlaender will be one of the first athletes to take to the ice in the women’s skeleton race at 9 am local time on Friday, Jan. 13th, followed by women’s bobsled at noon. The men’s skeleton competition will take place at 9 am on Saturday, Jan. 14th, and will be immediately followed by the men’s two-man bobsled race at noon. Koenigssee will also host the second team competition of the season at 4 pm on Saturday, and the World Cup event will conclude on Sunday, Jan. 15th with the men’s four-man bobsled race at 1:30 pm.
The U.S. features a full roster of competitors this weekend. Steven Holcomb and John Napier will pilot sleds in the two and four-man bobsled competitions. Women’s bobsledder Bree Schaaf will be joined by drivers Elana Meyers and Jazmine Fenlator, who missed the Altenberg competition last weekend while training on the 2013 World Championship track in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Women’s skeleton competitors Uhlaender, Annie O’Shea and Kimber Gabryszak will fight for the podium alongside men’s skeleton athletes Matt Antoine, Kyle Tress and John Daly.
“We’ve had a string of bad luck with the weather,” said Brian Shimer, men’s bobsled head coach. “We’re hopeful that things will turn around for us in Koenigssee, and you’d better believe we’re eager to get back on the podium. It should be a good series of races.”

The final skeleton Europa Cup races of the season will take place in Winterberg, Germany this weekend on Jan. 14th and 15th, while the Youth Olympic Games team traveled to Igls, Austria earlier this week to prepare for Opening Ceremonies on Friday. The team has two weeks to overcome jetlag and train before the skeleton and bobsled competitions on Jan. 21st and 22nd.
