Good Weather and Motivated Teams
The IBU Summer Biathlon World Championships started today at 1 PM with the Junior Mixed Relay. This is the 16th edition of the IBU Summer World Championships, which started in 1996 as Cross Biathlon. Rollerski competitions were added in 2006, with the Championships becoming exclusively rollerski competitions in 2010.

After being held last year in Duszniki Zdroj, Poland, the peak event of the Summer Biathlon series is now underway in Nove Mesto Na Morave with competitions scheduled through September25.
Preparations
IBU Officials have been quite satisfied with the preparations and the professional organization of the OC although the event takes place amidst construction of new tracks for winter biathlon. This construction has altered the rollerski tracks a bit, but in general the conditions are quite good with sunshine and a moderate 20 °C at the start of the first competition.
Over the past few days, 25 nations have found their way to this venue in the Czech Republic, which earlier this year hosted the Youth and Junior World Championships and has a World Cup in January 2012 as well as the 2013 IBU World Championships Biathlon on the horizon. Accordingly, this event will be a good training for the volunteers, but also a challenge for the core group who are under the pressure of coordinating the re-construction of the venue.
Top Athletes
There will be heated competition for the medals in the coming day as many countries including Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia and Czech Republic have brought some of their top Biathlon World Cup competitors.
Russia
Twelve teams toed the starting line for the Junior Mixed Relay (2 x 6K + 2 x 7.5K). From the start the Russian Team took the lead. By the end of the first leg, they had a 1:44 margin over the next team from Bulgaria, followed by the surprisingly good Korean Team and then Ukraine. The Slovenian Team moved up after the third leg and was followed by Ukraine as Korea fell back to the fifth position.
At the finish the Russian Mixed Relay team of Olga Galich, Olga Podchufarova, Nicolay Yakushov, and Dmitriy Dyuzhev took the Gold medal. The squad claimed a wire-to-wire victory and the World championships title, 4:28 in front of Slovenia. Third place and the bronze medal went to Bulgaria with Ukraine taking fourth. The host country Czech Republic finished fifth, while Korean found themselves in sixth.
