VENUE DESCRIPTION
Milan is once again the capital of winter sports, sixteen years after the FIS World Cup of cross-country skiing was held at the Fiera Campionaria Trade Fair and the Vigorelli Velodrome (in 1998). This is a dream that has finally become reality with Race in the city: Milan will host four races of the FIS Cross-Country World Cup presented by Viessmann in a special inner-city circuit, just a few minutes walk from Piazza del Duomo, the square that lies in the heart of this great metropolis, which is the international capital of fashion and design.

Race in the City is an absolutely novel event within the 2011-2012 FIS calendar, which includes a range of competitions on various street circuits. Milan will be hosting one of the most important events in a crucial weekend for the season of races, on the 14th and 15th of January 2012, exactly halfway through the season. The sprint races in Milan will be held immediately after the Christmas holidays and they represent the third and final event of the FIS World Cup to be held in Italy after the famous Tour de Ski at Toblach/Dobbiaco and Val di Fiemme. The programme at Milan and Dusseldorf (held in early December), is the only one involving two sprint teams, one male and one female, in addition to the individual sprint races.
The FIS Cross-Country World Cup will be held for the first time in its history in the Parco Sempione, the historic park and garden in the heart of the capital city of Lombardy.

As regards the technical aspects of the race, the circuit will be set up in the part of the Parco Sempione closest to the city centre, just a ten minute walk from the Duomo and central street Corso Vittorio Emanuele. The track will be in the form of a 620 meter-long ring, with the starting and finishing line at piazza del Cannone, opposite the beautiful Castello Sforzesco (Sforza Castle), an imposing monument to the rich history of the city and a symbol of its ancient identity, together with the cathedral and its majestic spire, known as the Madonnina.
The same circuit, of the same length, will be used for both the male and female races. The track does not have differences in height, which will be to the advantage of speed and entertainment value, especially in the last 250 meters before the finishing line, in which the athletes will release all their energy.

Waiting for them at the finishing line there will be a unique spectacle, the sight of the Castello Sforzesco, the picturesque setting of the event, and the skyline of the city of Milan with its historic buildings and modern skyscrapers, creating an absolutely original scenario for a FIS World Cup competition.
